Why Didn't the British Grand Prix Restart? Episode 22 Breaks Down Silverstone's Safety Car Finish

Charles Leclerc finally ended his winless run at Silverstone, but the story of the weekend was the FIA's safety car "software error" that killed the last-lap shootout everyone was expecting. Drew is still (mostly) recovered from losing his cool about it live on air.
Also in this episode: Kimi Antonelli's brake duct disaster and the track-limits penalty that made no sense, a genuinely bizarre one-lap penalty for Carlos Sainz, the Ferrari-vs-Mercedes upgrade arms race, Red Bull's "Macarena wing" striking again, and a full set of Spa-Francorchamps predictions.
🏁 This week's Pit Wall Question: Should the FIA have red-flagged the race the moment Verstappen crashed, rather than risk the safety car confusion? Drew says yes. Zac says the rules did their job. Drop your verdict in the comments — we'll read the best ones out next Wednesday.

British Grand Prix 2026: What Actually Happened
Charles Leclerc took his first win of the 2026 season and his first-ever victory at Silverstone, after leading a largely comfortable race that was thrown into confusion in the closing laps. George Russell brought his Mercedes home in second, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton completing the podium in third after surviving a post-race investigation for a yellow-flag infringement.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli started from pole and looked set to challenge for the win before a front-left brake duct failure wrecked his race, dropping him to 15th after a five-second track-limits penalty. A penalty Drew calls out as pointless on the show, since the fault cost Antonelli any advantage rather than gaining him one. Max Verstappen was running third when a rear-wing failure sent him into the gravel at Stowe with four laps remaining, the incident that triggered the safety car and the finish nobody saw coming.

Mercedes leads the constructors' table on 333 points, with Ferrari second on 255 and McLaren third on 179.
How the FIA's Safety Car Rules Actually Work (And Why the Restart Never Happened)
With Verstappen's Red Bull beached in the gravel at Stowe, race control brought out the safety car and later signalled it would return to the pits for a final-lap shootout, only to reverse that call moments later. This meant the race finished in formation behind the safety car. The FIA subsequently confirmed the "Safety Car In This Lap" message had been displayed in error due to a software fault. The correct procedure, one clear lap following the unlapping process, had actually been followed throughout, but the messaging created the impression a restart was imminent. It was the first time an F1 race had ended fully behind the safety car since Monza 2022, and inevitably drew comparisons to the botched 2021 Abu Dhabi finale.
This Week in F1: News Roundup
FIA confirms software error caused restart confusion - the governing body says regulation B5.13.5 was followed correctly throughout; the erroneous on-screen message was the only fault.
Verstappen calls Red Bull's rear wing "super-dangerous" after a second "Macarena wing" failure in as many race weekends, following an earlier incident in Austria. Red Bull says it will investigate.
Verstappen and Horner still in regular contact - Despite Christian Horner's first paddock return since his sacking coinciding with the anniversary of his exit, Verstappen confirmed the pair still speak "almost every week."
Hamilton keeps his podium after a stewards' investigation into a yellow-flag infringement; no further penalty was applied.
Sainz's rare penalty for incorrectly unlapping himself during the safety car period was added on despite having no bearing on the final classification.
Toto Wolff's "32 upgrades" jibe at Ferrari - The Mercedes boss suggested Ferrari has brought roughly double Mercedes' upgrade count this season, later clarifying the comment was made in jest.
